What is Zinc?Zinc is considered an essential trace mineral. It performs over 300 enzymatic functions in the body. Zinc is primarily stored in the muscles, bones and skin, with high concentrations in the retina of the eye, liver, kidneys, pancreas, bone, muscles and the prostate gland in men. It plays a role in virtually all biochemical pathways and physiological processes. Every cell in the body needs zinc; hundreds of body processes rely upon it. Zinc is needed for normal growth and development. It has been shown to help regulate a wide variety of immune system. Studies indicate that zinc may help to control blood sugar levels. In a small study conducted on children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, zinc was found to have a positive effect on some symptoms. Additional studies show that zinc may be an important component of skin health. One of the first signs of zinc deficiency is a lost of taste and smell, elderly people and vegetarians have a greater risk of deficiency.
