What is St. John's Wort?

St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one of the most popular herbs sold today. It was first used medicinally in ancient Greece. It was also used in ancient times as a "protector against evil spirits" and also topically for wound healing. This aromatic yellow herb is found throughout Europe and the United States, and is particularly abundant on June 24, the traditional birthday of John the Baptist. Thus the name in honor of St. John. Today, it is used in Europe by practitioners as the treatment of choice for mild to moderate depression, and is also used as a nerve tonic for anxiety. In a study on 20 randomized trials (some compared Hypericum perforatum to medication, others to a placebo) conducted on outpatients that suffer from mild to moderate depression, it was found that Hypericum perforatum performed better than placebo and was as effective as some standard antidepressants. Scientists hypothesize that its mood enhancing effects are due to two compounds, hypericin and hyperforin . They believe these compounds may inhibit the breakdown of several neurotransmitters, including serotonin, which is partially responsible for controlling moods and emotions.
